Green Lantern – Review

17 Nov

Ok where to begin! We watched this about 6 months ago but I haven’t had the heart to review it till now.

I had such high hopes for Green Lantern ! We all new there were issues but with the release of the cool trailer that invariably showed the best bits (see below) there was hope.

Alas they were all dashed.

There maybe spoilers here, so don’t read any more if you want to go into this movie blind !

Synopsis.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers.

But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before.

What worked
OK I know some of the lore of Green Lantern and am familiar with the Justice League, this movie is nothing like them !

What worked for me was when Hal first finds the ring and the training sections on the Green Lantern Corps Home World “Oa”.

Sinestro was played perfectly by Mark Strong.

Thats about it ….

Sorry.

What didnt work
In a nutshell the movie didn’t know what it was!

It was a comedy for 12 years olds that wanted to be taken as seriously as Batman Begins.

There was a nephew and Family that we saw for all of 30 seconds and then didn’t see again.

I’ve never seen a comic book movie where the audience laughs out loud at parts where they weren’t meant too … that happened here when we see Hal in his mask for the first time (Look at the trailer below)

There was never any real sense of danger with the main bad guys.

And the movie couldn’t decide if it wanted you to feel sorry for the main antagonist or not.

Conclusion

Bottom line don’t go in expecting a film of the calibre of Batman Begins and you’ll probably do fine.

don’t use this as a movie to introduce the comic book genre to someone as they’ll think your even more of a big kid then you probably are (I experienced this!)

Just call it a guilty pleasure and watch it on a Sunday afternoon .. on your own …. after a long time has passed from seeing it the first time!

Rating – 4/10
